Richard Allen Weems “Dick”, 70, passed away unexpectedly on March 4, 2022. He opened his eyes in the presence of his Savior where he most definitely heard, "well done, good and faithful servant." He was born July 10, 1951 in Birmingham, Alabama to James Duncan Weems Jr and Katherine Pope Weems.
Dick graduated from Fairfield High School in 1969 where he was a member of the marching band and National Beta Club. He attended the University of Alabama and was an active member of the Delta Theta Chapter of the National Fraternity, Beta Theta Pi and received his DMD from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 1977. Dick served in the US Army where he was commissioned with the rank of Captain in the Army Dental Core at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina.
He returned to UAB to earn a master’s degree in Dental Radiology in 1984 and became a dental educator. He served as an Associate Professor at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry and also taught in the Forensic Odontology Fellowship for the Graduate School of Medicine in Knoxville Tennessee.
Dick served as a dental consultant to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, and served as the Chief Forensic Dentist for the Jefferson County Coroner/Medical Examiner’s Office. He investigated over 270 cases involving bite mark analysis and victim identification. He served as the Region IV Dental Section Leader of the national mass disaster mortuary team, DMORT, and was deployed to the World Trade Center, as well as Hurricanes Katrina and Ike to aid in victim identification. Dick took great pride in bringing closure to families that were hurting. He is a retired Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and was a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Odontology. He served as Section Chair of the Odontology Section of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.
Dick was a lover of college football and never missed an opportunity to cheer on the Crimson Tide. He was moved by music of all genres. He had favorites that he would listen to for hours. He loved to watch trains and collected first edition novels and vintage slot cars. Greatest of all was his love for his family and friends through which his memory will live on forever. Left to treasure his memory are his wife of almost fifty years, Nancy Malone Weems; his brother, David Michael Weems Sr (Suzanne); Children, Jennifer Weems Zoumberis and Chris Weems (Krystle); grandchildren, Madilynn and Anthony Zoumberis, Raedyn, Harlynn, and Weston Weems; and family, Ann Malone, Kaye Garrison (Jim), Larry Malone (Nell), David Michael Weems Jr (Weronika), James Edward Weems (Julia), Amanda Malone Franklin (Kevin), Casey Malone Brown (Adam), Blake Campbell (Dena), Scott Campbell, Paul Garrison, and their sweet families.
