Rufus Franklin “Butch” Hutchison, Jr., of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on November 26, 2024, at the age of 76. Born on March 7, 1948 to Rufus Franklin Hutchison, Sr. and Constance Loujean Hutchison, Butch was the son of a bricklayer and became a skilled builder and bricklayer himself, proudly carrying on the craftsmanship passed down through generations.
Butch was married to his beloved wife, Sue, for over 50 years. Together, they raised two children, Jason Hutchison (Amanda) and Lee Hutchison-Boughton (Brian), and embraced the joy of being grandparents to three grandchildren: Arwen Hutchison Dillard (Jack), Connor Boughton, and Max Boughton. After the passing of his wife in 2021, he became a great-grandfather to Henry Dillard. He cherished his time with all of his grand- and great-grandchildren above all else.
He took immense pride in being Granddaddy and “Ho Ho” - a nickname coined by his grandson Max. He taught his grandchildren how to fish, made them many midnight snacks, cuddled with them in his big recliner as they read or played, and created lasting memories with them, all while showing them the kind of quiet strength that defined his life.
Beneath his tough exterior, Butch had a heart full of love and creativity. He oftentimes expressed this love for his family and friends through his crafts. Whether it was painting pinecones or making other types of unique pieces, Butch delighted in creating something special for his children and grandchildren, often surprising them with thoughtful, one-of-a-kind gifts. His hands, which had built homes and shaped the world around him, also crafted treasures that spoke to his deep love for his family.
Butch found joy in simple pleasures: listening to the music of Jimmy Buffett, spending hours thrift shopping with his family, and sharing Saturdays with his son watching Alabama football games. These moments, small but meaningful, were a testament to the love he had for his family and the things that brought him happiness.
Though he was a man of few words, Butch’s actions spoke volumes, and those who knew him understood him through his strength, his gestures, and the unwavering love he showed for his family. His face always told you exactly how he felt, a silent but profound communication that left an enduring impact on everyone around him.
Known for his resilience, Butch faced adversity with unmatched courage. Those who knew him well often recount stories of his propensity for walking off serious incidents, that would land most in the hospital, as if they were nothing. During his battle with cancer, his doctors marveled at his strength, as he endured chemotherapy with grace and poise.
Butch’s ability to push through pain and hardship, always for the sake of his loved ones, was a testament to his indomitable will and strength of character.
A visitation for Rufus Franklin “Butch” Hutchison, Jr. will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home and Cemetery, 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL 35124. A graveside service will follow from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM at Allan Cemetery, Birmingham, AL 35242.
Butch leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and perseverance that will continue to inspire those who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of experiencing his quiet strength and steadfast devotion.
