Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Ellis and Marguerite Walker. She is survived by her husband, James Michael Lockhart, and her sister, Charlotte Walker White.
Sharon spent much of her childhood in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She graduated from Holt High School and attended The University of Alabama. Soon after she married Michael on March 3, 1973, she returned to Birmingham to reside.
Sharon became a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church in 1983 and her faith in Jesus Christ grew into the most essential part of her life. She was active in Sunday School and Bible studies, but her main interest was Briarwood’s Bible Club ministry to children.
She began with a Bible Club in her home for children in the neighborhood and over time expanded that into an almost full-time ministry to children across the Birmingham metro area in day care centers, Birmingham Recreation Centers, YMCAs, and libraries. She planted seeds of faith in children who may not have otherwise heard the Gospel. Her teaching tools were a simple flannel board and figures of biblical characters to make the Bible come alive.
Sharon’s ministry to children spanned almost 30 years. She received the national President’s Volunteer Service Award from the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation in recognition of her work with children.
Family and friends will celebrate Sharon's life at the 3 p.m. memorial service on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at the chapel at Briarwood Presbyterian Church, 2200 Briarwood Way, Birmingham, AL 35243.
