Born and raised in Madison, Minnesota, Shirley grew up with four brothers. She left home after high school with a spirit of adventure that stayed with her throughout her life. Her travels eventually took her to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she met her husband, Don Loraine. Together, they built a life and raised their children, Jeff Loraine and Kelly Loraine Todd, in Richland, Michigan.
Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Don, and her son, Jeff, whose death at a young age was a profound loss in her life. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Monty Todd; her granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Morgan and Jordan Curtis; and her great-granddaughter, Kendall Loraine Curtis.
Shirley was always on the move. She loved to walk, exercise, and stay active. She also had a deep passion for serving others. While living in Birmingham, she worked at the medical school at UAB, where she especially loved her medical students and the opportunity to be a part of their journey.
Of all her roles, one of the most treasured was being “Nanni” to her beloved granddaughter, Morgan, and later great-grandmother to Kendall.
Shirley was a longtime member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Hoover, Alabama. She will be remembered for her quiet resilience, her deep faith, her happy spirit, her love for her family, and her heart for serving others.
Visitation will be held at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Hoover, Alabama, on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama at 1:15 pm.
