Shirley was born in Fairfield, Alabama in 1933. She attended Fairfield High School where she graduated first in her senior class. After graduation, she enrolled in the lda V. Moffett School of Nursing at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama to pursue a career in that field. She conducted her training largely in the Birmingham area, but also trained in pediatrics at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana and psychiatrics in Massillon, Ohio.
Shirley began her career at Lloyd Nolan Hospital in Fairfield, where she worked until the family moved to Montevallo in 1967. After taking some time off then to spend with her family, she later joined the staff at Shelby Memorial Hospital in Alabaster, Alabama serving as a unit coordinator in pediatrics.
One of Shirley's favorite pastimes was camping. She and Elliott started out camping with the family at Wind Creek State Park, sleeping in their car. Over the years, they had almost every type bf camper made, finally upgrading to an Airstream trailer (or the "Silver Bullet" as she liked to call it). She truly enjoyed the days spent camping with friends, and especially her family, seeing almost every U.S. state over the years. She and Elliott spent many winters in Melbourne, Florida "snow birding" with Elliott's sister Delene Williams and her husband Buster, and his brother Earl Robins and his wife Barbara.
Shirley was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Alabaster, Alabama.
