Virginia Lee Bonds Black

Virginia Bonds Black passed away peacefully at her Birmingham, Alabama home on Monday, August 9, 2021. She was 91.

Survivors include Virginia's six children, Arthur Jr., Jeffrey, Sheridan, and Joseph Black, Lettie Morgan, and Lenley Singletary; seven grandchildren, Rachel Singletary, Marie Singletary Larson, Robert Morgan, Joseph Morgan, Timothy Morgan, Anna Morgan, and John Black; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother, Nell Gaston Stewart, and her stepfather, Charles Windham Stewart.

Virginia was a member of the 1947 graduating class of Ramsay High School and the 1950 class of Jefferson-Hillman School of Nursing. She was employed at Crippled Children’s Hospital before raising a family. She was active and held offices in the Federated Garden Clubs and the Birmingham Botanical Society during early development of the Japanese Gardens. She also organized the Women’s Auxiliary to the Botanical Society.

After being out of nursing for 25 years, Virginia returned to work at Mercy and St. Vincent’s hospitals, moving up to nursing supervisor. Upon retiring 18 years later, she became a licensed realtor, employed by Ingram and Associates for 11 years.

The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to the dedicated caregivers of Dear Seniors who provided loving care and friendship in recent years, specifically Edith Ndei, Carla Venible, Flora Ali, Suad Khalaf, and Gina Dempsey, and to ExpectCare Hospice for excellent care and support.

Family and friends will gather for a graveside inurnment at Southern Heritage Cemetery in Pelham, Alabama.

In honor of Virginia's nursing career, memorial gifts may be made to the UAB School of Nursing, Office of Development and Alumni Relations, 1720 Second Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35294.
