

He is survived by his wife, Golathia Robertson Layton; sons, Richard Jason Layton and Robert W. Layton Jr; sister, Sarah Marie Roe (Terry); sister-in-law, Bobbi Layton; and special cousin, Sallie Elaine Brunk (Larry) and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Homer Cecil Layton Sr and Sarah Louise Champion Layton; grandparents, Sally S. Champion, Vivian M. Champion, Bessie Jackson Layton, and Lewis Layton; and beloved brother, Homer (Bo Jack) Cecil Layton Jr.
Robert was a 1959 graduate of Pell City High School, where he was the Vice President of his class. He excelled in basketball; after playing through high school years, he played several years of basketball with an Independent League. He was a Vietnam Veteran. He joined the U.S. Airforce in 1964 where he served six years and obtained the rank of Sergeant.
After his military service, he became employed by Greyhound Lines East for 35 years as a driver. He drove for schools, clubs, and other organizations as a requested driver. He was one of the seven Greyhound drivers who drove for the University of Alabama “Million Dollar Band” to all their games, including the Bowl Games for 19 years. He was requested by Second Century Club on their travels, including the Kentucky Derby for many years. His last ten years with Greyhound, his regular run was Birmingham to New Orleans. Robert received many awards and gifts from Greyhound for his years of service. He drove three million plus miles without a chargeable accident. On family trips and vacations Robert always saw someone he knew. He was friendly and outgoing.
After retirement, he spent many hours with his grandchildren, Eli Hayes Layton and Abby Elise Layton. Wherever he went, Eli was his sidekick. They both had many adventures with their Papa. He adored them.
He was of the Methodist faith and grew up participating in The Life of Pell City Weslyn Methodist Church.
Robert was a devoted husband to the love of his life, Golathia Robertson Layton for over 60 years. They have two beloved sons, Robert W. Layton Jr. and Richard Jason Layton. Robert had a friendly and outgoing personality. He was always ready to help anyone. He will be missed by many friends and relatives.
