

Bernard Avis Halterman, Sr., 88, of Pensacola passed away on Sunday, July 5, 2015. Mr. Halterman was born and raised in Covington, Va., graduating from Covington High School in 1944. After high school, he supported his country in the war effort by enlisting in the United States Navy, rising to the rank of fireman first class. He was commissioned to Japan in the summer of 1945.
Upon Japan's surrender, he returned to the United States, where he received an honorable discharge. He married Juanita Childs in August 1948, and the couple settled in Arlington, Va., raising three children together. For many years he worked as a sales representative for Washington, D.C. area bakery Ottenberg's, making sure stores and restaurants throughout Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia were stocked with Ottenberg's breads and rolls.
Between 1969 and 1976, he spearheaded a number of entrepreneurial endeavors, such as automobile detailing and taxi driving. He owned and operated a fleet of taxis under the Yellow Cab name in Alexandria, Va. from 1976 to 2007. Mr. and Mrs. Halterman called Pensacola home since 2005, after previously spending many years in Arlington, Va.; Covington, Va.; and Gettysburg, Pa. He was a proud member of American Legion Post #240 in Pensacola, Fla., as well as Moose Lodge #1315 in Arlington, Va.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Forrest James Halterman and Effie Agnes Cale Halterman; his wife, Juanita Childs Halterman; his siblings, William Allen "Bill" Halterman, Forrest Lanier "Lucky" Halterman, and Mildred Overton; and one grandchild. He is survived by his three sons: Austin Hines, Jr. of Martinsburg, W. Va., Bernard Halterman, Jr. of Alexandria, Va., and James (Janet) Halterman, Sr., of Pensacola, Fla. Additionally, he is survived by nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
