Born on May 24, 1984, and raised in Pensacola, Florida, Derek lived a life defined by curiosity, kindness, and a genuine love for the people and things around him. A talented software engineer, he had an incredible mind and an endless passion for technology—always learning, exploring, and staying up to date with the latest innovations.
Outside of his career, Derek found joy in life’s simple moments—listening to music, capturing memories through photography, enjoying a good cup of coffee, and talking about cars. A proud self-proclaimed “nerd,” he brought both humor and brilliance into everyday life.
Derek was funny, generous, and deeply kind. He had a contagious laugh, an animated way of telling stories, and a presence that could light up any room. A true gentleman, he showed love through small, thoughtful actions and treated everyone with respect.
He was a devoted husband to Joanna and a loving dog dad to Ollie, Jax, and Bella. He is also survived by his father, Darryl Gates, and his grandmother, Peggy Gates.
Derek was a true friend—encouraging others to grow, pursue their passions, and stay curious. His enthusiasm for life and his genuine spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
