She was born on October 31, 1926, in Panama City, Florida to Frank and Olivia Nelson. She was predeceased by her parents and all eight of her siblings who were affectionately known as "The Nelson Nine".
She eloped and married her lifelong love, John (Pete) Hawkins in August of 1950. He preceded her in death in 2012 after 62 years of marriage.
Hazel was a true Southern Belle. She loved deeply, completely, and unconditionally. She shared her love with food, such as real fried chicken with all the trimmings, fruitcake, pound cake, and many other southern delights.
She was a graduate of Florida State College for Women, which later became FSU. In her early years of marriage, she was an elementary teacher at Navy Point Elementary.
Hazel is survived by her son and daughter and their spouses; John and Kathy Hawkins, Marc and Joyce Cobb; grandchildren Logan Cobb, Georgia Cobb, Tyson, and Soha Cobb, and a great-grandchild Sonya, on the way. Plus many nephews and nieces. All of these she loved and touched deeply.
She will be honored in a small and private family service.
Meme will remain in our hearts forever.
