Marilyn Bloom Meyer Freeman, a Gulf Breeze resident for more than 40 years and a longtime educator, mother and friend, died in her sleep Friday, May 31, 2013, under hospice care. She was 82.
Mrs. Freeman, who retired as a teacher in Santa Rosa County schools in 1990, played bridge avidly, traveled widely and worked enthusiastically in support of several non-profit enterprises. She served on the board of the Pensacola Jazz Society, volunteered at Baptist Hospital, was a member of the Symphony Guild, and worshiped at the United Methodist Church of Gulf Breeze where she was a member of the Mary Miller Circle. She delighted in her Krewe of Campeche activities and friends. Her social life was full.
She moved to Gulf Breeze first in the 1950s when she and her husband, the late Charles Freeman, built a home there before the community incorporated. She returned in the early 1970s after having lived in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Lagos, Nigeria.
She was a proud graduate of Florida State University and an active member of the FSU Alumni Emeritus Board.
Mrs. Freeman was born to Herbert Albert Meyer, a statistician, and Margaret Bloom Meyer, a linguist, in Louisville, Ky. on Dec. 5, 1930.
Mrs. Freeman is survived by her daughters, Lynn Rees (Alan) of Gainesville, Ga. and Leslie Yandle (Gerry) of Pensacola; by a sister, Carol Keener, of Cincinnati; by a brother, George Meyer (Mary Frances) of Tampa; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and by a daughter, Terry Freeman.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 23rd, at 2:00 pm, at Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church. A reception will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Marilyn's name to the Gulf Coast Kid's House or to the Pensacola Humane Society would be appreciated.
Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.
