Mary Eugenia (Field) Alvarez passed onward to God’s care May 2nd, 2016. She was born to George and Ruth (Taylor) Field September 2nd, 1927 in Bogalusa, LA and spent her life in the port cities along the northern Gulf Coast.
Mary was preceded in her journey by her sisters Georgiene Trice and Elsie DuPré, and her husband of 65 years, Philip M. Alvarez, and is survived by her daughter, Eugenia Carnley (Larry) and son, Captain Phil Alvarez (USN, Ret.) (Terri); grandchildren, Gene Carnley (Clare), Ashley Lavalle (Tyler) and Anna Powell (Jonathan).
Always on the go, Mary was actively involved with the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Red Hat Society. She mastered genealogical research and traced the collective family lineage from the first arrival of descendants on the Mayflower to those dating back to the early 13th century, and traveled extensively to the respective countries of origin in search of records and distant relations. Mary was a rabid New Orleans Saints fan who, upon witnessing the team’s first and only Super Bowl win in the 43 years since the franchise began, felt life was then complete. She commented, however, that it might be sometime in the next millennia before they would likely win again - Geaux Saints. During Mary’s last years she enjoyed the constant company of Mr. Ben Elder who cared for her deeply; our family is most grateful for his coming into her life and ours.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 Saturday, May 21st at the Bayview Memorial Park Chapel of Peace followed by an 11:30 Celebration of Life at V. Paul’s restaurant in downtown Pensacola; family and friends are welcomed to join us.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, DC.
BAYVIEW FISHER-POU CHAPEL, 3351 Scenic Highway is entrusted with arrangements.
