Born on October 14, 1927, in Georgia, Mary was the cherished middle child of nine to the late Duncan and Lola Feeney. She met the love of her life, Capt. C. Dan Stitt, USMC (Ret.), early in life, and together they shared a lifetime of adventure, raising beautiful children while traveling the world.
In the 1960s, the Stitt family made their home in Pensacola, FL, where Mary and Dan developed a deep love for sailing and became actively involved in the Pensacola Yacht Club. As the wife of a past Commodore, Mary was a familiar and gracious presence at many social events throughout the community.
While raising her family in Pensacola, Mary became a devoted member of Christ Church Episcopal Parish and consequently raised her children in the Episcopal Church. Her faith remained a quiet but steady foundation throughout her life, shaping the values she lived by and passed on to her family.
They eventually settled in the Big Lagoon area, where Mary created a home filled with warmth, love, and laughter. She had a gift for making everyone feel welcome—many of her children's friends fondly called her “Mother Mary.” Mary always had a kind word and compliment for everyone she met, touching hearts with her gentle spirit and genuine warmth.
Mary endured many losses throughout her life; however, she manifested grace and strength in the face of her losses. Her resilience, along with her unwavering kindness, served as a source of comfort and inspiration to those around her.
In her later years, Mary found joy in the friendships she built within her Bayshore community. She especially treasured her weekly wine socials, luncheons at the Yacht Club, and the quality time spent with her beloved family and friends. One of the greatest joys of Mary’s life was the birth of her only grandchild, Abigail Galis Stitt. She delighted in watching Abigail grow into a beautiful, free-spirited young lady who has continued the Stitt family legacy of sailing with the Pensacola Yacht Club and shares a true love of the water—just like her grandparents before her.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Capt. C. Dan Stitt, USMC (Ret.); her beloved children Rodney Daniel Stitt, Lee William Stitt, Antoinette “Toni” Mary Stitt, and Jim “Jimbo” Paul Stitt; as well as several sisters: Gladys F. Vaughn, Myrtice F. Kirk, Inez F. Ecton, Geneva F. Law, Sarah F. Maddox, nieces, and nephews.
Her memory will be forever cherished by those she leaves behind: her granddaughter, Abigail Galis Stitt (and Scout Buffy); daughter-in-law, Tracie Worley Stitt; siblings Duncan C. Feeney Jr., Margaret F. Stapleton, and Betty F. Enlow; and many loving nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
On behalf of Mary, the family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at The Phoenix at Lake Joy in Warner Robins, GA, her dear friends Patricia Hilton-Green and Marilyn Woodbury, nieces Donna F. Frazier, Diane F. Pennington, and her beloved caregiver Aleceia “Shay” Baggs, whose care and companionship meant the world to Mary in her final years.
Although born and raised in Georgia, Mary’s heart belonged to Pensacola, where she made a lasting impact on all who had the joy of knowing her.
Mary’s legacy of love, grace, faith, and quiet strength will be treasured forever by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.
A funeral mass will be held in her honor at Christ Church Episcopal Parish on Friday, July 25, 2025, at 4:00 PM. Honorary pallbearers will be David Duncan Feeney, James L. Pennington III, B. Glen Stapleton, Commodore David Johnson, Lindsey Ritchie Riddle Jr., and Hunter Robert Riddle. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pensacola Yacht Club in honor of the Lee Stitt Memorial Regatta.
