He was born on June 27, 1923 in Peoria to Charles William Jr. and Vera (Stewart) Maurer. Gene married Bettie Louise Forquer on March 22, 1946, in Peoria. She preceded him in death on April 2, 2008. He was also preceded in death by his parents; son, Craig Allen Maurer; brother, Robert Maurer; and son in law, Richard Slutz.
Gene is survived by his children, Terrie (Jim) Myers of Mapleton, Ill., Ed (Becky) Maurer of Columbus, MS., and Marilyn Slutz of Princeville, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren.
Gene was a proud World War II U.S. Navy veteran who served from 1942 through 1945 aboard the USS Moffett in the South Atlantic and Mediterranean. While the Moffett did not participate directly in the D-Day landings, the ship played a vital supporting role. After returning home, Gene completed Bradley University’s education training program and was immediately recruited by Caterpillar, where he worked as a Jr. electrical engineer until retiring in 1983. Gene was a founding member and elder of Richwoods Christian Church, where he faithfully served for many years. He loved children and especially enjoyed serving in the church nursery, where his gentle nature and warm smile made him a favorite among the little ones.
