He was born September 27, 1949 in Peoria to Carl and Mary (McFall) Mitchell. He married Elizabeth Dieck on March 8, 1969 in Peoria. She survives along with one daughter, Lisa (Martin) Lesones of Petersburg, IL, two grandsons: Alex (Dana) Lesones of Metamora, Mathew Lesones of Crete, IL, and one great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Lesones of Metamora. He is also survived by four sisters: Marilyn of Chicago, Cheryl (Fred) Koehl of Peoria, Mary Lynn (Jeff) Drone of Yates City, IL, Margaret (Benny) Boyer of Pekin, two brothers: David (Karen) Mitchell of Metamora, Charles (Kathy) McCoy of Pekin, and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Charlotte Mitchell, Janet Sue Hedden, and two brothers, William Lightbody, and Richard Mitchell.
Gary was a United States Army veteran serving in Vietnam from 1968 through 1970. Following his time in the military, Gary worked for Caterpillar, Inc. for 30 years then was a Bailiff in Peoria for 18 years.
He was a lifetime member of the Bartonville American Legion Post 979.
Visitation will be Sunday, August 18, 2024 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria. Funeral services will be Monday, August 19, 2024 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria with Military Honors.
