He was born on March 30, 1938, in Atlanta, Illinois, the son of Marion R. Sullivan and Frances M. (Behrends) Sullivan. Scotty married Annie Gaye Wilson on August 19, 1961, in Peoria. She preceded him in death on January 9, 2003, in Peoria.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; his granddaughter, Shannon Wyman; and two brothers, Marty Sullivan and Larry Zehr.
Scotty is survived by his two daughters, Annie (Timothy) Wyman of Peoria and Katie (Matt) Wyman of Dunlap; five grandchildren, Alexandra (Luke) Murphy, Maggie (fiancé, Dave Dwyer) Wyman, Aidan Wyman, Samuel Wyman, and Jonah Wyman; one great-granddaughter, Ellie Dwyer; and one sister, Susan Chelikas of Morton.
He was a proud graduate of Woodruff High School Class of 1956 where he was an accomplished two-sport athlete, playing football and baseball. He was a two-time selection for All-Conference for each sport and was a key player for the 1955 undefeated Woodruff football team, never leaving the field as he was a running back, linebacker, and place-kicker.
Scotty graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Building Construction Technology from Bradley University in 1960, attending on a dual athletic scholarship in both football and baseball. He lettered three years in both sports. He was a 3-way starter in football and was co-captain of the 1959 team. During his BU baseball career, he was a scrappy outfielder with a .315 batting average and led the team in stolen bases in 1959 and 1960, helping the team win the MVC conference title in 1959 securing them a spot in the NCAA tournament.
Scotty served his country in the United States Army Reserves prior to joining the workforce.
After his service, Scotty briefly worked for George Johnston Construction. He then became a masonry estimator for Otto Baum Company, Inc. in Morton, where he enjoyed a successful career for 42 years. Scotty would always say he “couldn’t lay the bricks, but he could count them”. Two of his more notable masonry jobs were the Peoria Civic Center and the Beckman Institute on the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana campus.
Sports remained an integral part of Scotty’s life. He officiated high school and small college football for 32 years, working one state high school championship game as well as numerous playoff assignments. He also played in the Sunday Morning Baseball League and in a fast-pitch men's softball league for several years and enjoyed watching his favorite baseball team, the St. Louis Cardinals. His weekends were spent golfing and if he wasn’t at an out-of-town tournament, you could find him at Pine Lakes Golf Club. As he grew older and found it harder to golf, you could still find him at Pine Lakes working as a ranger for their outings. Scotty enjoyed snow skiing with his friends and family and spent many vacations in Keystone, Colorado. He was able to make his last run down the mountain upright and in one piece at the age of 76.
Scotty was inducted into Bradley’s Hall of Fame in 1965 for his accomplishments while there. He was also inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. At the time of his induction, he had served on the GPSOF Board of Directors for 17 years. Scotty was inducted into the Peoria Officials Association Hall of Fame in 2008. He became a charter member of the Salvation Army’s William Booth Society in 2004 and received the Salvation Army “Others” award in 2015 for his ongoing support and dedication to the organization.
Above all of these accomplishments, Scotty would tell everyone that he was most proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter. Scotty’s family would like to thank the staff and caretakers at Heartis Village of Peoria for the wonderful care and dignity they afforded him in his last years with us. He was treated like family and came to love living at the facility.
