Peoria - Larry D. Jenkins, 87, of Peoria, passed away on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at his home. He was born on July 8, 1934 in Canton, a son of Roy F. and Marie R. (Hunter) Jenkins. He married Judy Walsh on September 2, 1961 in Canton. She survives.
Larry is also survived by his son, Michael (Cindy) Jenkins of Peoria; his daughter, Michelle (Michael) Weghorst of Pekin; and four grandchildren, Joshua Jenkins, Dillon Jenkins, Mariah Weghorst, Claire Jenkins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister; and three brothers.
Larry graduated from Canton High School in 1952 and Western Illinois State in 1956 with a B.S. in Education. While at Western he was elected senior class president, president of his fraternity, Kappa Sigma Kappa, and Campus Personality.
He served his country in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959.
He graduated from Bradley University in 1970 with a M.A. degree and accumulated sixty hours beyond his degree with an Administration Endorsement.
Larry taught English for 34 years at Richwoods High School in Peoria. While at RHS he taught behind the wheel Driver's Education, was a B.A.A. advisor, public address announcer for football and basketball, sponsor on the student council, chairman of the North Central Visitation, representative on many textbooks and curriculum studies and English department chairman.
He was a member of the Independent Sports Club, Hanna City Sportsmen's Club, Big Lakes Farm, and St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.
A private service will be at Resurrection Mausoleum Chapel in Peoria.
A special thank you to the staff and medical personnel at Heartis Village and VITAS Hospice for their loving care for Larry.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Illinois Cancer Care in Peoria.
