Lucille Matthews, affectionately called “Mother Lucy” of Peoria, was born on May 21, 1925, to the late Wesley and Dora (Triples) Matthews, in Indianola, Mississippi. She departed this life on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 in Normal, IL. Lucille, the oldest of four children, was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Lucille worked at the Zeller Mental Health Center for 22 years. She was also employed by
Dr. & Mrs. Ward for 18 years and the Salvation Army; all in Peoria, as well as the Peoria State Hospital in Bartonville, IL. She worked in child care, housekeeping and as an assistant teacher.
Mother Lucy confessed Christ at an early age. She was a faithful member at the New Cornerstone Baptist Church, Peoria, IL, where she served on the Mothers’ Board, was a teacher, kitchen worker and sang in the choir. She loved the Lord and was a very caring individual who gave unselfishly of her time. She held Bible study in her home and visited the sick and shut in hospitals and nursing homes. Mother Lucy was the kind of person who believed in helping and doing for others as much as she possibly could.
Lucille was a Mother, grandmother, sister, advisor and mentor to many. She loved beautifying her flower garden and washing her car (almost daily).
Lucille leaves to cherish her memory two loving brothers Ivery Matthews of Georgia and Eddie Matthews of Kansas; a devoted goddaughter, Lula (Gertie) Jordan of Normal, IL, her church family and a host of other relatives and friends.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
