Dr. Prakash Babu, a visionary engineer and pillar of the Peoria community, passed away at home on April 5, 2026. He was born on March 5, 1949.
Prakash completed his undergraduate degree in Metallurgical Engineering from KREC Suratkal (now NITK Surathkal) and arrived in the United States in 1970 to pursue advanced studies on a competitive assistantship at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned his Doctorate in Engineering—a foundation that shaped his distinguished life and career.
In 1974, he joined Caterpillar Inc. as a metallurgical engineer. Over a remarkable career spanning more than three decades, he rose to become the Worldwide Director of Quality, retiring in 2005.
His most visible community legacy stands on Temple Hill Road. As Founding Chairman of the Hindu Temple of Central Illinois, Prakash led the monumental engineering effort to construct Temple Hill Road. This work involved the precise cut-and-fill of over 44,000 cubic yards of earth and complex boring beneath roads, creeks, and dual railroad tracks, bringing vital infrastructure to the Temple, the Nirvana subdivision, and the Prairie Lane neighborhood.
Beyond its physical construction, he helped shape the Temple into a center of cultural understanding and inclusivity, transforming how Hinduism and Vedic teachings were experienced in Central Illinois. He encouraged participation across communities—welcoming both Hindu and non-Hindu visitors—and made the Temple a shared space for the broader public. Through collaborations with local universities and institutions, he fostered dialogue, education, and connection across traditions.
For Prakash, engineering was a sacred service—a way to build what he called an “Architecture of Integrity” for both the spirit and the soil. This vision extended beyond Peoria to rural India, where through his family’s Durgam Foundation he helped develop educational centers, community spaces, and a medical hospital, along with programs that provided essential resources and opportunities for children and families. Whether shaping land or lives, he approached each effort with the same precision, humility, and sense of purpose.
He is the beloved husband of Ratna; devoted father of Ashvin (wife, Chandrika; children, Arjun, Aradhana, Aishwarya, Avya), Ashok (wife, Nicole; children, Anjali, Neela), and Anand (wife, Nicola; children, Kalyan, Roshan, Ananya); and a guiding light to his nine grandchildren. He now joins his grandson, Chethan (son of Ashok and Nicole), in eternal peace.
May we all strive to build roads that lead others home.
