Porter, Betty Valerie - Valerie Porter died peacefully in her sleep at St. Joseph's at Fleming on March 13, 2016 in her 93rd year. Valerie was a graduate of UBC and her first job was with Indian Health Services in Port Arthur, working as a nurse practitioner in remote locations in Northern Ontario. She and her late husband Robert moved to Peterborough in 1956, where they raised their sons Geoff and John. Valerie continued to work in nursing in Peterborough, first teaching at St. Joseph's Hospital, later working with the Peterborough County Health Unit, and finally working in Occupational Health at the Peterborough Civic Hospital. She was an active member of the community, and a founding member of the Peterborough Symphony Orchestra. Val was the proud sister of Kay Carter, who was the catalyst for the Carter Decision of the Supreme Court of Canada. She was the equally proud grandmother of her six grandchildren, Tom, Jocelyn, Katherine, Jessica, Pamela and Jackson. She will be greatly missed by her entire family and her many friends. A private family memorial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Val to the Peterborough Symphony Orchestra would be appreciated by the family. www.thepso.org
