LOFTUS; David Hall – David died peacefully at his home in Peterborough, Ontario, on Thursday, October 6, 2022, in his 76th year. He was born on September 10th, 1947 in Toronto to Kenneth Howard Loftus and Marguerite “Peggy” Loftus. Loving and proud father of Melissa Peron (Mark), Maryann Roebuck (Ben) and Jay Loftus (Michelle). Doting and adoring Grandpa of Cole and Amelia Peron, Isaac, Mavis and Tian Roebuck, Nathan and Jonah Loftus. Brother of the late Roderick Loftus, and survived and missed by siblings Jodi Graham (Rob) and Kevin Loftus (Liz). David will also be remembered by Alice Loftus, Carmen Jones, nieces, nephews, and many friends and community members.
David was a gentle, caring man, an avid book-lover, a passionate cook with a philosopher’s soul. He loved to help people. He enjoyed connecting with friends, family and his community. But he also found peace in quiet moments of solitude. He found solace and awe in the wonder of nature.
David earned his Honours B.A. in Geography at York University. He then lived in Malawi as a teacher with CUSO for two years, and returned to York to complete a Master’s Degree in Geography (1975). His work with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources in the Owen Sound, Bancroft and Peterborough locations began as a biologist and ended as a policy officer in conflict resolution and negotiations with Indigenous groups. In 2001, as a member of the Bruce Peninsula Fisheries Negotiation Team he earned the honour of an Amethyst Award for outstanding public service. Following his retirement from the public service (2007), David enjoyed a second career teaching English as a second language to newcomers to Canada, which he devoted himself to until December 2021.
David was a seeker. He sought peace and meaning in the uncertainties and heartache of life. “Heaven is in the imperfect,” he would say. His family will always feel him in the most tranquil moments of dawn - his favourite time of day.
In keeping with David’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a simple Celebration of Life will be held at the Comstock-Kaye Life Celebration Centre, 356 Rubidge Street, Peterborough on Sunday, October 23rd from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Sandwiches and refreshments will be served. Memories will be shared at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be greatly appreciated. Online condolences may be made at www.comstockkaye.com
