It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, born June 9, 1931, in Cupids, Newfoundland. The daughter of Rebecca (Batten) and Roy Dawe, both of whom predeceased her, she arrived into the world at just 2 lbs and began life with a resilience that would carry her through to her 96th year. She passed peacefully at Peterborough Regional Health Centre, surrounded by family.
Her life’s journey took her across the country, beginning in 1955 when she married the love of her life, Cecil Akerman, and moved to Halifax. From there, she relocated to Montreal, where her son Murray was born. Newfoundland soon called her home again, and it was there that her daughter Jocelyn arrived. A few years later, she moved to Ontario, where she built a long and full life before eventually retiring back to Newfoundland in 1992. She and Cecil enjoyed their retirement in Newfoundland until 2014, welcoming many visits from friends and family, before moving back to Ontario to enjoy precious time with their children and grandchildren.
After 62 years of marriage, she faced the loss of Cecil in 2017 with extraordinary strength. Even through her own health challenges, she continued to show the same quiet courage she had carried since birth.
She will be remembered for her kindness, her gentle spirit, and the unwavering love she gave to her family. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Jocelyn (Charles) and her son Murray (Penny), her cherished grandchildren—Kyle (Nicole), Brock (Ashleigh), Hunter (Monica), and Amanda (Alasdair)—and her adored great grandchildren, Mack, Mila, and Nora, who brought her immense joy.
She is predeceased by her brothers Irvine (Ruby) and Wendell (Beth), survived by her brothers Roy (Rosalind) and Ross (Betty). Her legacy of resilience, devotion, and quiet strength lives on in all who loved her, carried forward in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and the many family and friends whose lives she touched so deeply.
