Our feisty and fearless Freya passed peacefully on Saturday, December 7th, 2024 at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto.
She is survived by her long-time love and partner, Don Bennett, and his son Paul (Alana) of Peterborough, granddaughters, Maylin and Lorena, sisters Loreley Beaulac and Kris (Mike) Goss, brother-in-law Don Dodds (all of Sarnia) and her devoted niece, Michelle Beaulac of London. Freya is survived by several other family members in Sarnia, Peterborough and British Columbia, as well as many dear friends in Florida. She is predeceased by both her parents, Arthur and Marie Petersen, brother Roald, sister Kerri Dodds and niece Ann-Marie Dalmas.
Freya was unapologetically herself. You always knew what she thought and how she felt. Freya spent many years working in the hospitality industry. She began her career as a car hop at Tab’s Drive-In in Sarnia and worked in several restaurants in both Sarnia and London before landing at Viamede Resort on Stoney Lake, north of Peterborough where she was the food and beverage manager. Freya was always a hard worker and devoted herself to her job and the people closest to her.
Freya felt most at home near the water. She loved living at the lake and travelling on the water. Proud of her Scandinavian heritage, Freya and Don were avid cruisers on Norwegian Cruise Line. Some of their happiest times were spent on holiday—whether it be aboard a cruise ship or on their yacht, ‘The Last Resort’. Together they earned the distinction of becoming ‘Loopers’ as they circumnavigated ‘The Great Loop’, a continuous waterway through the Great Lakes, inland rivers such as the Mississippi, the Gulf of Mexico, Intercoastal waterways and the Atlantic Ocean.
Freya was a true animal lover and passionately supported animal rescue. She will be very much missed by her two fur babies, Sunshine and Bandit, along with the multitude of birds and other wildlife she fed at their winter home in Florida.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at both Toronto General and Princess Margaret Hospitals for their care and compassion during her brief cancer journey. A special thank you to the many friends and family who travelled to visit or reached out to offer support during her illness and hospital stay.
Cremation has taken place. In keeping with Freya’s wishes, no visitation or funeral will be held. In lieu of cards or flowers, donations can be made to the Peterborough Humane Society. A private gathering will be scheduled in the spring when we can meet in a sunny garden and raise a glass of wine to toast our one-of-a-kind partner, sister, aunt and friend.
