Dec 3, 1931 – Oct 3, 2026
After almost 95 years, George finished his final race and won his biggest prize ever––Heaven and eternal life with his Lord and Saviour who he served so faithfully his whole life. He is now reunited with his wife, Shirley (nee Gordon) who was the love of his life for 65 years; his infant twin daughter, Catherine; his parents George and Rosella; his sister, Marg; his older brother Frank; granddaughter-in-love Susan; and all those friends and relatives who have gone before.
What a reunion!
Those of us who are left grieve our loss here, but rejoice in the hope we have in Christ, and that his tired body is at rest.
George is survived by his youngest brother Dave (Judy), and many nieces and nephews who cherished their Uncle George’s interest in their lives and endeavours. Uncle George performed almost all of their weddings. Lovingly remembered by sister-n-law, Carolyn and Don.
He was the most amazing father to Colleen (Steve), George IV (Karen), and Andrea (Jason).
His grandchildren: Ryan (Sue), Raechelle (Dave), Jenny (Juan), Graeme (Stef), Charity (Don), Josh, Piper and Ryder all adored and treasured their adventurous, fun loving, curious, proud, caring grandpa, gramps and poppa.
He was loved by his great-grandchildren, some who had the privilege to know him and some who never got that opportunity due to distance. George and Sam, Elouise, Ry and Jules, Jade and Hayden, Wyatt and Hunter all had a great grandpa who looked on with interest at their young lives, enjoyed their visits, and held them in his prayers as they grew.
He was even blessed with three great-great grandkids, Declan, Kohen and Lucy, who, unfortunately, he never got to meet. But his love, values, joy of life and faith will be passed on
Dad wore other hats besides family titles. He was Pastor George, or Reverend Ewald, to those in his congregations in Tweed, Deseronto, Kingston, Bridgenorth and Chatham ON, Lennoxville QC and Mesa AZ. His faithful ministry, genuine love and care for people were long remembered in each community he ministered in.
To hundreds of young men and women, he was a professor and mentor at Eastern Pentecostal Bible College in Peterborough ON where he was deeply loved and respected by his students.
He honed his carpentry skills over the years by building four houses and a cottage, as well as building or renovating six churches––not to mention the many renovations he did for all his kids and grandkids!
If George was your friend or neighbour, you hit the jackpot! Someone who looked out for you and was always ready to lend a helping hand or listening ear. If he was competing against you in track, or boxing, or basketball or tennis you had your work cut out for you. An avid outdoorsman, he canoed and sailed and, in his early years, enjoyed camping.
In his latter years, Dad suffered with dementia and became a resident of Centennial Place in Millbrook where he was cared for with respect, dignity and love. Our thanks to the many staff there who brightened his days, especially the MIllpond staff and the Life Enrichment staff who gave his days some sparkle and entertainment.
Thanks also to Chaplain Gordon Finlay who honoured George’s life of ministry and blessed him for it.
We say a very special thanks to our wonderful private PSW, Janet Lock, and her sidekick Daisy. Thank you, Janet, for your love and care for Dad both in his home and in the nursing home. We couldn’t have done it without you!
Special thanks, as well, to the nursing staff of PRHC, ER orange unit, and 3B, where you treated Dad so well. Thank you for your kindness and respect. Also, to Sherry from Hospice who helped us navigate the last few days. You were a gift.
In lieu of flowers we ask that you consider donations to: The Alzheimer Society of Canada, or Centennial Place Long Term Care in Millbrook (Benevolent Fund).
