Jim was born October 19, 1921 in Toronto, but soon thereafter his parents Ivan and Edith moved with him to Peterborough. His first school was King George, but when the family moved to the west end he went to Queen Mary. He was very pleased to attend its 100th Anniversary in 2013. After graduation Jim started Peterborough Collegiate Institution (precursor of PCVS) in 1935. While there he won medals at track and field events, was First Violin in the school orchestra, wrote the school song, and was captain of the Signals Company in the PCVS Cadet Corps. He was awarded Head Boy status in 1940. This meant a lot to him, especially the gold cufflinks. In 1940 he was accepted to the University of Toronto. He initially registered in Political Science and Economics, but within a week switched to Honour Law. He was pledged to the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. In 1943 he enlisted in the RCNVR in 1943 as an Ordinary Seaman. With his university education he could have applied to be an officer, but felt this it would delay him "doing his bit", and he took a two week radar course because it was the quickest way to get to sea. He served on the minesweeper HMCS Lachine, and became an Able bodied Seaman. In 1944 his captain recommended him for officer training and he was appointed as Sub Lieutenant. Jim was posted to the corvette HMCS The Pas, doing North Atlantic convoy escort duty from Halifax. In May 1945 he got leave and used the opportunity to marry his high school sweetheart Jeanne Marie Ketcheson. He was discharged from the Navy on September 15, 1945, and the very next day he enrolled at Osgoode Hall for his legal education. He spent 3 years there: an LLB normally took 5 years but with extra courses at U of T he obtained his degree in 1947. Jim was called to the Bar in 1948, returning to Peterborough and starting practice with John Currelly. He had been a student with him, and F. D. Kerr. In 1949 he joined W.B. (Pete) Gordon, following the death of G.N. Gordon. They initially practiced in the second floor of the Cluxton Building on the south west corner of George Street and Hunter Street. In the 1960's Jim and Pete purchased 163 Hunter St. West and he practiced there until his retirement. His nickname was "Gentleman Jim", for his integrity and courteous manner. His son Peter continues the practice at the same location.
Jim was very proud of his children, James David Lillico born in 1949, Peter Bryce Lillico in 1952, and Nancy Anne Lillico in 1959.
He joined the Peterborough Kiwanis Club, eventually becoming a Director. He was President of the Peterborough Law Association and the Victorian Order of Nurses. He was on the Board of Managers and the Board of Trustees of St. Andrew's Church, following in his father Ivan's footsteps. He was a member of the Peterborough Motor Sports Club; the Ontario Motor
League, Peterborough Branch; the Peterborough Civic Hospital Board; the Peterborough Symphony Orchestra (violinist and Board member); the Royal Arthur Lodge of the Masonic Lodge. Jim was a lifelong car lover, his first drive at age 11 was a Model T Ford (without his father's permission). Over the years he joyfully owned 30 cars (31 if you count the 1935 Bentley he bought twice.) He retired from practice in 1990, the same year he sold the Bentley for the last time.
Jeanne Marie died February 16, 1997. He married Ruth Sage McIntyre Standish April 25, 1999, and she predeceased him on December 8, 2016. He loved both his wives dearly, and they made his life worth living, long and well.
Jim passed away peacefully on March 13, 2019 in the company of his family,
surrounded with love.
