Passed away peacefully on October 3, 2026, with his wife, Lee, and his faithful dog, Miller, by his side.
Mac was predeceased by his first wife, Annie “Nan” Elliott McIntyre. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Linda Janson, Reg McIntyre (Diana), and Norma Haigh; his grandchildren, Chris Janson (Hillary), Sara Haigh (Doug Pierce), Stuart Haigh McIntyre (Nicole), Lindsay McIntyre (Steven DeMarco), and Samantha McIntyre; and his great-grandchildren, Raeya Hughes and LJ McIntyre.
He will also be deeply missed by his “bonus” children, Cavin Jones and Trevor Jones (Elke), and his bonus great-grandchildren, Carissa, Russ, and Will Jones, and their mother, Sarah.
Mac was born on October 19, 1927, to Eva Miller McIntyre and Reginald Walsh McIntyre and was raised in Peterborough, Ontario. From an early age, he developed many of the passions that would remain with him throughout his life. He enjoyed downhill skiing and water skiing, discovered a lifelong love of gardening, and completed his tool and die apprenticeship at Canadian General Electric.
It was in Peterborough that Mac met his future wife, Nan Elliott. They eventually moved to Detroit, where they began their married life and raised their family. Mac served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan. While there, he worked as a fireman—and, true to form, even managed to grow a vegetable garden.
Although Mac lived and worked in Detroit for many years, Peterborough was always home in his heart. He returned regularly for summer vacations and Christmas visits with his parents. In 1964, he and Annie purchased their cottage on Chemong Lake, beginning a tradition that would become one of the most cherished parts of family life.
Summers at the cottage were filled with boating, water skiing, games of kick-the-can, good food, and even better company. Friends from Michigan were always welcome, and there was rarely a dull moment. There were breakfast parties on the patio and, as summer drew to a close, the much-anticipated annual corn roast. It became a beloved tradition, with friends and neighbours from along “Whiskey Strip” gathering together to celebrate another wonderful summer at the lake.
Mac retired from Lunar Industries in 1987, and he and Annie moved permanently to their home on Chemong Lake. Retirement gave Mac even more time for the things he loved: gardening, golfing, entertaining friends, and spending time with family. Dinner parties became a regular part of life, and the annual August corn roast continued to bring everyone together.
After Nan passed away in 1993, Mac faced a new chapter in life. He learned to cook, make apple pies, and, as the family liked to joke, even write a cheque. He continued to garden, ski, golf, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy the life he had built at the lake.
Mac was fortunate to later find a wonderful friend and companion in Lee Jones. They shared many interests and many friends, began dating, and eventually Lee joined Mac at his home on Chemong Lake. They later married and enjoyed many happy years together. Their life was filled with gardening, golf, travel to Scotland, golf trips throughout the United States, cruises with friends, and, of course, the continuation of the much-loved annual corn roast.
Mac lived a long and remarkable life—one filled with family, friendship, hard work, adventure, laughter, gardens, golf, skiing, travel, and summers at the lake. He had a wonderful ability to make people feel welcome, and his home was often the gathering place for family and friends.
His traditions, stories, gardens, and generous spirit will live on in the many people whose lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family, friends, neighbours, and all who had the good fortune to know him.
And somewhere, we hope, there is a beautiful garden waiting for him. And if there isn’t, there is no doubt in our minds that Mac will create one.
Visitation will be held at Comstock-Kaye Life Celebration Centre, 356 Rubidge St., Peterborough on Thursday, October 8th from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. & Friday, October 9th from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. followed by the Funeral Service in the chapel at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Rosemount Memorial Gardens, Peterborough.
