December 24, 1975 – November 25, 2024
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Patricia "Tricia" Jane Lytle (née Kellestine), who, at the young age of 48, left us on November 25, 2024, surrounded by her loving family at Peterborough Hospice. Her courageous and inspiring battle with breast cancer came to a close in the embrace of those dearest to her.
Tricia will be forever remembered by her devoted husband and high school sweetheart, Douglas Kevin Lytle, and their beloved children, Sara Michelle (Jake) and Douglas Owen. She was the cherished daughter of Eileen Elizabeth "Betty" Kellestine (née Hutt) and Donald Ross Kellestine (predeceased) and the beloved daughter-in-law of Doug and Jackie Lytle.
She was a treasured sister to David Hutt (Airlie), Suzanne Stoer (Pat), Christopher Kellestine (Aislinn), and Robert Kellestine, as well as a loving sister-in-law to Stacey Lytle (Sean) and Alfred Lytle. Tricia was the proud and loving aunt of Amia, Edie, Adele, Foster, Travis (Brooke), Ryder, Asten (Anupa), Yasmine (Franky), Makeesha (David), Reiner, and Rogan, as well as numerous other family members and friends who will miss her dearly.
Tricia was born on December 24, 1975, in Alliston, Ontario, where she spent her childhood. She met Doug in high school, and together they built a beautiful life, moving to Peterborough to pursue their post-secondary studies.
Tricia followed her dream of becoming a teacher, a role that perfectly aligned with her love for children and her natural ability to nurture and inspire. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Trent University, an Early Childhood Education diploma from Sir Sandford Fleming College, and a Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University.
Her professional life was dedicated to shaping young minds. Tricia taught with passion and creativity as an elementary school teacher with the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board. She spent many years as a beloved kindergarten teacher at Keith Wightman Public School, touching the lives of countless students and families. Earlier in her career, she taught gifted students in a challenging split-grade class at CR Gummow in Cobourg and spent formative years teaching at Waverly Public School in Bowmanville.
As a wife and mother, Tricia’s greatest joy was her family. She poured her heart into creating a home filled with warmth, laughter, and love. She adored her nieces and nephews and made every effort to ensure they felt just as cherished as her own children.
Tricia’s energy and zest for life extended far beyond her family and career. She found joy in gardening, cycling, camping, and raising monarch butterflies, helping hundreds of them thrive and take flight. A devoted Blue Jays fan, she also found time to compete in mini-triathlons across Ontario, inspiring others with her commitment to health and fitness. In 2015, Tricia was chosen to be a torch bearer for the Pan Am Games.
Her sense of community was profound. Tricia believed strongly in giving back and volunteered tirelessly with organizations such as the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre, the Peterborough Food Bank, and Canadian Blood Services. She paddled in solidarity with other breast cancer warriors as part of the Survivors Abreast Dragon Boat Team and was instrumental in raising thousands of dollars for breast cancer awareness and other charitable causes. Even in her final months, Tricia continued volunteering at her school, demonstrating her unwavering dedication to her students and her community.
Tricia’s legacy is one of love, resilience, and compassion. She taught us all the importance of living fully, giving freely, and finding beauty in life’s simplest moments. Her favorite phrase, “Just keep swimming,” will remain a source of strength and inspiration for those she leaves behind.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Ashburnham Funeral Home, 840 Armour Road, Peterborough, Ontario, on Saturday, December 7, 2024, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. A private interment for immediate family will take place at a later date.
