Peter was a loving father, husband, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend whose quiet kindness, compassion and generosity of spirit nourished everyone around him. He is survived by his wife, Cathy Mitchell Huels, and sons Jakob Huels-Elliott (Natasha Croft) and Isaac Huels-Elliott (Morgan Squibb).
Preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Marilyn, Peter leaves behind sisters Sarah (Rod Johnson) and Rebecca, and nephew William Johnson, along with members of the Douglas, Mitchell, Couzbainian, McLean, and Cummins clans—all of whom will miss him terribly while remembering him with love.
Peter’s calling as a chef was to feed people both physically and spiritually—a labour of love that gave him purpose and joy. In the kitchen and beyond, he mentored with patience and humour, sharing his craft with future generations.
Many knew him as a source of comfort and counsel, offering wisdom and understanding to anyone in need, regardless of their circumstances. Others will remember the avid camper who found peace in the woods and on the water. All will remember him as a lifelong seeker—full of wonder and curiosity.
Peter showed great courage during his lengthy illness. Although our hearts are heavy, we find solace in the knowledge that he can finally rest. We release his spirit to the stars, comforted by the thought that the answers to life, the universe, and everything await him there.
On behalf of their families, thank you to the countless healthcare professionals who supported Peter and Cathy throughout this long journey. Chi-Miigwetch to the Sacred Water Circle for the prayers and songs.
A private ceremony will be followed by a celebration of life for family and friends. In place of flowers, donations to One City Peterborough or Kawartha Land Trust are appreciated.
A Celebration of Life will be held for the family and close friends on Thursday November 27 from 6-9 pm with Words of Remembrance at 7:30 pm.
