Terry Huffman, a lifetime resident of Peterborough, Ontario, passed away peacefully at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre on March 21, 2025, with his family by his side, at the age of 86. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and community member.
Terry was married to his beloved wife, Marilyn, for 59 years until her passing in 2021. Together, they raised two children, Kelli Posavad (Mike) and Kerry (Kim), who were the pride of their lives. He was also a cherished grandfather to his grandchildren, Brittany, Jessica, Alec, Zac and Caden offering them unwavering support and love.
A respected educator, Terry dedicated over 35 years to teaching in the Peterborough school system, leaving a lasting impact on countless youth. He was admired for his commitment to his students, his gift for inspiring a love of learning and the lasting friendships that he built with his colleagues.
Beyond the classroom, Terry was actively involved in the community. His passion for music played a significant role throughout his life, both professionally and in retirement. He was an active member of several Peterborough concert bands, most recently the New Horizons Band, which kept him engaged and active into his 87th year.
Terry was deeply involved in the hockey community serving on the Peterborough Minor Hockey Council and playing an integral role in organizing local hockey tournaments. As longtime fans of the Peterborough Petes, he and Marilyn opened their home as billets to members of the team which kept him engaged with many in the community, fostering friendships that lasted a lifetime.
A man with a generous heart, Terry was always ready to lend a hand to those in need. Whether canvassing for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and March of Dimes or taking members of the homeless community out for a warm meal, he believed in giving back and making a difference in the lives of others.
Terry could often be found at the arena or wandering through Lansdowne Place, always stopping to chat with familiar faces. It was a running joke in his family that he couldn’t go anywhere without finding someone to talk to.
The family is profoundly grateful to the doctors and nurses at PRHC for their compassionate care of Terry and the support they provided to the family during his time there.
Terry’s warmth, dedication, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former students, and the entire Peterborough community
Respecting Terry’s wishes there will be no visitation or funeral. Instead a private family and close friend gathering will take place at a later date. To honour him, donations can be made to PRHC, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, by baking cookies for your neighbour, or taking a walk around Lansdowne Place Mall or the new Miskin Law walking track.
