William Thomas Merchant was born May 26, 1949, in Sydney, Nova Scotia and died peacefully, on July 29, 2026, in Peterborough, Ontario at the age of 77.
Bill is survived by his spouse, Carrie. He is also survived by his children Allan (Rachel), Tyler, and Kate (Pat), and their mother Nancy; and by his stepchildren Christopher (Amy) and Ashley. William was a proud grandfather to Zoey, Maddie, Lucas, and Aislynn. He is also survived by his siblings Lynn, Jo-Anne (Brian), Greg (Diane), and Donna (Bruce), as well as many nieces, nephews, and great friends.
An adventurous spirit ran through Bill’s life, showing itself in the places and pastimes he loved most—time at the cottage that he built, hunting both close to home and abroad, including on the plains of Africa, and snowmobiling. He also took genuine enjoyment in the Toronto Blue Jays and the simple pleasure of a glass of fine wine, especially one from France, finding in these moments the quiet satisfactions that make a life well lived.
In keeping with Bill’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Visitation will be held at Comstock-Kaye Life Celebration Centre, 356 Rubidge Street, Peterborough on August 22nd from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. Followed by a Memorial Service in the Chapel. A reception at the funeral home will follow the service.
