Betty Lou Hamilton passed away at her home on April 6, 2021. She was born on January 21, 1936 in San Antonio, TX to Lilian and Woodrow Curd. She served as an administrative secretary for an architecture firm in San Antonio from 1955-62. Betty attended Trinity University on a scholarship from Travis Park Methodist Church from 1955- 1959 and graduated with a B.A. in Music.
In 1962 she met Dr. Gordon Hamilton at a church Valentine’s Day party. They were soon engaged, and married on August 18, 1962. They lived in Peoria, IL from 1963-1965. During this time she served as a Public Relations secretary for the City of Peoria. The couple moved to Austin in 1965.
The constant joys in her life were her faith, her family and her love of music. Betty played the organ, taught piano, and composed music including special songs for each of her grandchildren. Betty was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. She was active at Northwest Hills UMC for over 40 years. The highlights of her life were the opportunity to play the organ at the Canterbury Cathedral in England and the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal.
Betty was active in the Austin Dental Auxiliary, Women’s Symphony League, and the Assistance League of Austin. In later years Betty and Gordon shared interests in sailing, traveling, and the continuing education program through UT Austin.
She is survived by her husband, Gordon; their son, Dr. Kenneth Hamilton and wife, Robin and his children, Sarah, Rachel, and Hannah; her daughter, Dr. Karen Lass and her husband, Steven, and their children, Faith and Joshua; also her sister, Vicki Curd Aijian. A brother, Woodrow Curd, preceded her in death.
A memorial/celebration service for Betty will be held at 2 pm on May 15 at Northwest Hills United Methodist Church. Instead of flowers, she requests that you do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for someone in her memory or gift to a charity of your interest. We extend our gratitude to Hospice Austin for their exceptional and compassionate care.
