Born September 18, 1933, in Harlingen, Texas, Betty Jo is the daughter of the late Aubrey Louis Kinnebrew and Sonja Viola (Bronander) Kinnebrew. A 1951 graduate of Edinburg High School, Betty married Dan Lindsay Roberts in 1952. They were blessed with three children. After 60 years of marriage, Betty’s husband preceded her in death on December 24, 2012.
When their children were of junior high school age, Betty returned to college; attending first at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi and later graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Arts in English. Betty worked in the Synod Office for the Lutheran Church and volunteered at the Austin State School, teaching the residents. She later taught second and third grades in the Austin Public School System.
Her joy in learning and teaching carried over into her home life. Betty loved children, holidays, roses, and shared her eagerness for learning. A lover of great literature and beautiful poetry, Betty shared her passion, both as a student and as a teacher.
Betty was a woman of high standards, strong moral fiber and deep faith. A devout Lutheran, she was a long-time member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Her faith and her church were an important part of her life.
She is survived by her daughter, the Rev. Sonja Dalglish and husband, the Rev. Dr. Doug Dalglish of Kingsville, Texas; son, Kenneth Roberts and wife, Linnie Shimfessel of Austin; and son, David Roberts and wife, Nona of Pflugerville. She also leaves six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, along with other loving relatives and dear friends.
