Catherine Elizabeth Sheehan, lovingly known as “Betty,” passed away just shy of her 103rd birthday, leaving behind a legacy of faith, family, and unforgettable warmth. Born on August 4, 1922, in Yonkers, New York — “the good side,” as she liked to say — Betty was baptized at Sacred Heart Church and remained a devoted Catholic throughout her long and joyful life.
In the early 1940s, Betty married the love of her life, John Vincent Sheehan of Worcester, Massachusetts. Their journey took them across states and homes — from Army life in South Carolina to Yonkers and eventually to Boston, Massachusetts, New York City, Florida, and Texas. Wherever they landed, Betty created a home filled with love, laughter, and the smell of something delicious on the stove.
Family and community were the heart of Betty’s world. She was a fierce PTA volunteer, a staple at bake sales, and an active parishioner. In every city she lived, she brought people together — whether in the East River NYC apartments filled with grandkids and giggles or neighborhood gatherings in Pflugerville, Texas, where she earned her affectionate title, “Church Grandma,” at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church.
After John’s passing in 1998, Betty’s resilience never waned. In 2003, she moved next door to her son Bob and his wife Michelle, building a gate between their yards — a symbol of the deep connection they shared. Her days revolved around faith, family dinners, and joyful holidays.
For the last six years, she celebrated holidays at her granddaughter Farren’s home, always welcoming new faces to the family with grace and her signature sparkle. In her final years at Heritage Lakes Senior Living, Betty — known fondly as “The Queen” — charmed staff and residents alike with her wit, wisdom, and open heart. Her favorite event was the annual St. Paddy’s Day party. When asked whether she wanted a second sip of Bailey’s, she famously quipped, “A bird can’t fly on one wing!”
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Helen Hanrahan; her husband, John; her son, John M. Sheehan; and her grandson, Ryan Sheehan. She is survived by her daughter, Kay Lippmann (Elmer) of Minneapolis; her son, Bob Sheehan (Michelle) of Pflugerville; four grandchildren and their spouses; and a growing tribe of great-grandchildren who will carry forward her stories, her stubborn streak, and her love.
A celebration of life and interment will be held on May 10th at 2:00 pm at Cook Walden Funeral Home in Pflugerville. In honor of Betty’s vibrant spirit, guests are asked to wear bright colors. Raise a glass with a little Irish in it, and toast to a life well-lived — and a woman who made every place feel like home.
Nana — we love you double.
