He proudly served his country in the US Army for over 6 years, receiving the Purple Heart Medal and Bronze Star during the Italian Campaign. He married Lois Kee and they settled in the Austin area. Charles worked for the City of Austin in the Water Department for over 28 years. In his younger days he spent much of his free time raising cattle and horses (including a few race horses). Because of his love for horses, Charles enjoyed riding with the Travis County Sheriff’s Posse for many years. He had a knack for gardening and was known for his lush and beautiful vegetable and flower gardens. His greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his family. Many fond memories were made each summer when the grandkids would spend time with him and Lois.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Vivian Goodnight; his wife, Lois Kee Goodnight; his daughter, Brenda Saunders; and several brothers and sisters. Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Carrie Johnson and her husband Dave; granddaughter, Carol Middleton and her husband John; grandson, Troy Charles Lovell and his wife Suji; great grandchildren, Amanda, Cayley, Kyle, Cody and Kaci; great great grandchildren, Gabriel and Conner; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Charles’ memory can be made to The American Cancer Society.
