Doris Hess was born in Sturgis, Kentucky at home. She was the youngest of three daughters, June, Olean, and Doris; the trio born to Robert Ivo Poindexter and Ella Dee Martin Poindexter. Doris was a beautiful child and grew into a lovely woman and fell for the Love of Her Life - William David Hess. They were quite the pair…her 5’ 2” to his 6’ 2”. They were married Dec. 25, 1941 right after the Pearl Harbor attack and a few weeks later William Hess, being in the Navy, was shipped out with the Pacific Fleet. They were part of what we call the “Greatest Generation”. After the War’s end, Doris and William David (W. D. – alias “Dub”) settled down and had three “Adorable” children; Joanna Sue, David Michael (Mick) and Timothy Lynn. They were quite the active little scamps who absorbed all the goodness Doris heaped upon them in big hugs, understanding, caring and a stern look, if needed, which was often!
Doris is preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters and the love of her life, William David Hess. Doris is survived by her three children; Joanna (John) Harkins, Doris’ grandchildren: John Keith Jr. (Stephanie) Harkins and Jeffrey Christian (Elizabeth) Harkins, —David (Ava) Hess, Doris’ grandchildren: Shalom (Remlen) Rebalde and Nahum Rebalde -- Tim (Gail) Hess, Doris’ grandchildren: Sandy (Adam) Santorelli and Natalie (Justin) Collazo. Doris has numerous great grandchildren; Victoria Hayes Harkins, William Edwin Harkins, Tyson Keith Harkins, Jason Ray Harkins, Jebez Rebalde, Joab Rebalde, Abigail Morgan Santorelli, Bodie Hesston Santorelli, Madeleine Holly Collazo and Brayden Timothy Collazo.
Take the sweetest smile…the kindest eyes…patient ears…a gentle touch and a forgiving heart and wrap it all with unconditional love and deep abiding faith and you have Doris Hess. Blessed are we all to have had this remarkable Lady in our lives.
Doris Hess, you were content to let us shine…that’s your way. You always walked a step behind. We were the ones with all the glory, while you were the one with all the strength. Did you ever know that you’re our hero, and everything we would like to be? We can fly higher than an eagle, for you are the Wind Beneath Our Wings. It might have appeared to go unnoticed, but we’ve got it all here in our hearts. We want you to know, we know the truth, we would be nothing without you. You are everything we wish we could be…You Are The Wind Beneath Our Wings.
