Elvira Sabana Gil — beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend — known to most as Vera and cherished by her family as "Baby," passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026. She was 74 years old.
Born on August 19, 1951, to Otilita and Bernabe Sabana, Vera grew up in South Austin, where she built lasting friendships and treasured memories. She graduated from Austin High School in 1969 and later made her home in Pflugerville, Texas, where she built a life full of love and purpose.
Vera was a force of nature — strong, bold, and fiercely devoted to her family. She spoke her truth with confidence and led always from a place of love. Her presence could fill any room, and her laughter, humor, and playful spirit had a way of drawing everyone close. She had a deep love for music, dancing, and storytelling, and a signature style — leopard print and all — that reflected her vibrant, unapologetic personality.
Her creativity shone through in the way she decorated and crafted, bringing beauty and festivity to every season and holiday. Yet beneath her bold exterior was a profoundly tender heart. Vera was the steady anchor of her family — a source of guidance, unwavering support, and unconditional love for everyone fortunate enough to call her their own.
She leaves behind a legacy of strength, joy, and deep love that will not be forgotten.
Vera is survived by her husband, David R. Gil; her children, Anthony Gil (Rachana), David Gil Jr. (Sharlym), and Gloria Gil; her grandchildren, Destinee Martinez, Amber Diaz (Tommy), Alyssa Gil, Angelina Gil, Soraya Gil, David Gil III, and Aria Gil; her great-grandchildren, Isaiah Rider, Noah Rider, and Anaiah Rider; her mother, Otilita Sabana; and her siblings, Rachel Ybarra, Alfred Ortiz, Sara Garcia, Bernabe Sabana Jr., and Janell Smith, along with a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her father, Bernabe Sabana.
