Ernest Lee Goodman, was born January 16, 1930 in Austin, Texas to the late parents Lindsey and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Goodman. He departed his life on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at the age of 84.
He accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age and he was a faithful member of Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church, where he served on the Usher board and was in the Male’s Chorus until his health failed.
Ernest received a formal education in the public schools in Austin, Texas. He later enlisted in the United States Army where he proudly served his country. He continued playing and participating in sports while serving: boxing, football, track and baseball were a few that he gained awards in. As well as the sports awards, he was awarded several honors in the Army and received an Honorable Discharge.
He found love with his loving wife Annie Bell Owens, and to this union two children, Ronnie T. Goodman and Sharon Diane Goodman Lee were born. Fifty-nine years they cherished one another with love and support enjoying each other’s friendship and companionship. As he enjoyed his marriage, his children, family and friends also, he found an enjoyment in the game of golf. He participated in golf tournaments from Austin, TX, Dallas, TX even as far as Las Vegas, NV.
A Beloved husband, father and grandfather combination, you could only know that family was very important to Ernest, he took being the man of the house (provider) very seriously. He enjoyed spending time with all his family. Ernest taught his family that your word and honesty is all you have in life. A man with not a lot of words, but when he spoke you knew to listen because he was easy going and this is something you needed to hear. One thing you knew when he was in the room was his big smile, which will leave everlasting joy in your heart because he was a humble man.
As well as being a loyal family man, he was also faithful to his job at White’s Instruments where he retired; he was also driven by his extended family at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church. Mr. Ernest never like staying still so he returned to work as a Crossing Guard for Austin Independent School District and a testing proctor for Austin Community College.
Everyone that knew Pops loved him and respected him because he was honest and fair. His presence will be deeply missed, his charity will continue to shine and his legacy will forever have everlasting life.
