Gene was born in Plum City, Wisconsin, on March 11, 1939, to Herman Paul Blomstrom and
Lucille (Hewitt) Blomstrom. He attended Plum City Elementary School and graduated in 1957 from Plum City High School along with two of his first cousins. Upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother James Paul Blomstrom; and son Dale Eugene Blomstrom. He is survived by his wife of almost 66 years Dolores Ann (Carr) Blomstrom; daughter Elizabeth Ann (Blomstrom) Gillett (Allan); son Paul Hilton Blomstrom (Cydney); grandsons Matthew Reinhold Gillett (Megan), Tyler Allan Gillett (Jeanlyn), Jonathan Frank Gillett (Emily), and Jacob Paul Blomstrom (Janelle); great granddaughter Jane Lynn Blomstrom; great grandson Jackson Paul Blomstrom; and step great granddaughter Winslow “Winnie” Jurado.
Gene did his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. His first duty- assignment was in North Africa. Upon his return to the States in 1959 he was stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, Texas. It was during this assignment that he and Dolores met and then married on February 20, 1960. While in the Air Force he was in the Air police. He remained at Bergstrom until his discharge from active duty in 1961.
After the Air Force he worked a couple of temporary jobs until the Austin Police Department conducted a cadet class. He was commissioned as a Patrol Officer in 1962. In 1969 he was promoted to Sergeant and worked in several departments during his career: among them Vice, Narcotics, and the Organized Crime Unit. Upon his retirement from APD in 1992 he worked for the Capital Area Drug Task Force where he was the supervisor of the field agents from the counties under the Task Force’s Jurisdiction.
During his nearly 40 years of police work he also held part-time jobs to earn extra money for the family. He worked security at North Cross Mall and drove truck for various trucking companies in Austin.
The Family would like to especially thank Cherthena from Right at Home and Jessica from St. David’s Hospice for their wonderful care during Gene’s final days. Anyone wishing to make a charitable contribution in his memory may do so to the Hospice Foundation of America.
