Ilo Ann Porter Hiller, 81, of Austin, Texas, passed away on December 7, 2019. She was born to the late Hershel and Kathryn Porter in Alexandria, Indiana on July 28, 1938. She was raised by Hershel and her stepmother Dorothy Baker Porter after the age of 8. Ilo married her friend and love, James Edward Hiller on February 22, 1957 and was lovingly married for 62 years.
Inspired by her passion for traveling and appreciation of nature, Ilo had a long career as a writer for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine and was a published author of four animal and nature books. She retired from the department after 30 years of service. Also inspired by her love of nature, she was a member of the Good Sam club and spent many years exploring Texas and the U.S. with Jim and her camping group. Ilo was a long time member and well-loved greeter at Austin Baptist Church where she was very involved. In addition, Ilo had a passion for collecting salt and pepper shakers and was an enthusiastic member of the National Salt & Pepper Club. She owned over 5,000 sets of shakers.
Ilo was a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend. Her favorite pastime for many years was spending time with her husband and attending every dance competition and sporting event that involved her grandchildren. She was extremely social and enjoyed spending time with all of her family and friends and never met a stranger. She had a wonderful sense of humor and very loving personality. Everyone who met Ilo liked her and enjoyed conversing with her.
She was preceded in death by her parents Hershel and Dorothy Porter, her birth mother Kathryn Porter, her brother Larry, and her daughter Terri Lyn Hiller. She is survived by her husband Jim Hiller, her son Jay Hiller and his wife Marla and grandchildren Austin Strickland Hiller and Brooke Elizabeth Hiller.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, December 13, 2019 in The Memorial Chapel of Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery, 14501 North Interstate Highway 35, Pflugerville, Texas.
The funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 14, 2019 in The Memorial Chapel of Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery, 14501 North Interstate Highway 35, Pflugerville, Texas. The family will enjoy food and fellowship prior to a committal service at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery, 14501 North Interstate Highway 35, Pflugerville, Texas at 1:30 p.m.
