August 11, 1952 - October 18, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of James Dale Guthrie, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother. James left us on October 18, 2025, at the age of 73.
James was born on August 11, 1952 in Lubbock, TX, and lived a life full of love, adventure, and curiosity. He is survived by his wife, Laura, his cherished children, Sara (Carman) and Tyler, Stepchildren Evan (Isabella) and Philip (Luci) and his adored grandchildren, CJ, Katie, Colton, Violet, Leo, Jason, and Stevie. He also leaves behind his beloved mother, Mattie, and his sister, Kay (Jason), who will miss him dearly.
A man of many passions, James had an insatiable love for BBQ and spicy food, often bringing his family together for meals filled with flavor and laughter. He never missed a chance to make his prized Chili and share it with those that could handle the heat. As an avid pool player, James enjoyed the camaraderie of a good game with friends at the local pool hall. He also found great pleasure and peace while fishing, either in his kayak or from the shores of The Gulf. James always looked forward to playing a good round of golf or hitting golf balls at the range and he loved nights where he could listen to live music at local venues. James had a profound interest in family genealogy, dedicating countless hours to unraveling the stories of his ancestors and connecting with his roots. This passion for history and family was a gift he shared with his loved ones, inspiring them to appreciate their heritage and the bonds that tie them together.
A proud veteran, James served his country honorably in the US Army during the Vietnam War. His time in Vietnam was challenging, and upon returning home, he faced the inevitable struggles of reintegration. He faced these challenges with courage, strength, and dedication to something greater than himself, traits that he carried throughout his life. After his military service, James pursued his passion for automobiles, becoming master mechanic, and was lucky enough to earn a living doing something he loved. His love for cars and speed was infectious, and he was thrilled to get the opportunity to participate in the NASCAR experience where he got to drive at speeds over 200mph.
James Guthrie will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He was a man of few words but profound wisdom that he shared with us all. His legacy of love and laughter will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched. He will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit, his overwhelming generosity, his mischievous sense of humor, and his devotion to his family. As we say goodbye, we celebrate a life well-lived. May James rest in peace, his spirit forever alive in the memories of those who loved him.
A celebration of James's life will be held November 9, 2025 at Casa Garcias, 15803 Windemere Dr. 604, Pflugerville, TX 78660 . In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Living Grace Canine Ranch.
