She was born in Kirtley, Texas, grew-up in Smithville, Texas, and graduated from Smithville High School in 1955.
She married Robert (Bobby) Pfertner on July 2, 1955, and they were together until Robert passed away in 2003. She and Bobby lived in San Francisco for a short period of time before returning to Texas to start a family. Their life in the Austin area was filled with BBQs, beach trips, and participating in the Catholic Church.
In her work career, Joyce was a Supervisor for Data Center Tape Media, State of Texas, Health and Human Services Commission. She retired in 2000.
Joyce was a parishioner at St. Mary Cathedral Catholic Church in Austin for many years. In 2019 she moved to a nursing home in Round Rock and became a parishioner at St William Catholic Church.
Joyce was affectionately known as Joyce, Mom, Nanny, Grandma, and generously cared for extended family members when they were in need. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren provided tremendous joy to her later life.
She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Fannie Dornak, her husband Robert (Bobby), and her sons James and Steve.
She is survived by her sisters Jonell and Ann, daughter Mary, daughter Frances Pfertner Hancock (Clark), son Rob Pfertner (Janette), 12 grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren.
Joyce's service and interment will be private.
