Julia married J.W. Miller in 1942. They raised 2 sons in San Antonio, TX and she worked as a telephone operator for 20 years, starting at Lackland Air Force Base and then for SW Bell. She lived in San Antonio until 2005, when she moved to Arlington, TX. She moved to Baytown in 2011.
“Doodie” loved to take her kids to her parent’s house in Austin as well as to visit other family members who lived in Austin or Georgetown. She was a member of the Baptist Church in San Antonio.
When the boys were younger, she loved to visit her brother Cotton in Corpus, where the kids helped build a boat with their father and uncle in “Uncle Cotton’s Garage”.
They then used the boat to go fishing as a family in the bay. One trip out into the bay at the 12 mile limit, in a 14 foot boat, the boys found out that neither of their parents could swim- but that was not a reason to stop going out.
Holidays were spent together, celebrating the holiday and playing games at home with their children and grandchildren.
All vacations west had an interim destination – Las Vegas – whether they were going to California, Disneyland, or the Grand Canyon. The City of “Lost Wages” as she called it, was fun to her – she was the queen of the one armed bandits. At home, she walked slow – in Las Vegas, she could outwalk and outpace even the youngest. If she thought she had a trip coming up to her favorite city; that was all she could think about.
