

Kay, a devoted educator was born in Columbia, South Carolina on December 25, 1932. She was educated in the public schools of Columbia and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. She received the Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia. She taught in the Columbia Elementary School System for two years before becoming the wife of Lt. Col. Joseph T. Hicks, Sr. and began to spend time in the US and Germany. She taught elementary school until her retirement. Her career entailed over forty years teaching experience.
Kay became an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and participated in other church activities to show her commitment to the church and the work of God. She was also an active member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the Hampton University Alumni Association.
Kay leaves to cherish her fond memories, Joseph T. Hicks, Sr.; one son, Joseph T. (Luisa) Hicks, Jr. of El Paso, Texas; one daughter, Kimberly Hicks of Austin, Texas; two grandchildren, Joseph T. Hicks, III; one granddaughter, Megan Hicks; one brother, John W. Goodwin of Columbia, South Carolina, a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2012 from 10am-11am at Wesley United Methodist Church, Austin, Texas. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 8, at 11am in the church following the visitation. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks in Pflugerville.
