Mary Louise Geron passed away on July 14, 2016, in Pflugerville, Texas, at the age of 89. Born in Coffeyville, Kansas, on March 10, 1927, Mary Lou Epley was the second surviving child of Charles Richard Epley and Bertha Louise Hubartt. She treasured her years growing up in Coffeyville where she participated in many school activities and discovered a life-long love of music and talent for singing. As a high school student during World War II, she sang with local dance bands including ones performing at the air cadet training base in Coffeyville.
One of the pilots in training fell in love “at first sight” when he heard Mary Lou singing a solo one Sunday at the Presbyterian Church. Charles W. Geron said he knew that day that she would be the girl he married. Mary Lou’s family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, where she attended Del Mar Junior College while Charles was stationed in India. Upon his return, Charles and Mary Lou married in Corpus Christi on January 27, 1945, and celebrated 67 years together until his death in 2012.
Mary Lou was a devoted charter member of the Parkway Presbyterian Church in Corpus Christi where, among other activities too numerous to name, she served on many committees, taught Sunday School, conducted the children’s choir, and participated in the work of many women’s groups.
After teaching four-year-old students for 23 years, she retired from the Jewish Community Center. Mary Lou and Charles moved to Pflugerville, Texas, in 2009.
Mary Lou was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who will be forever remembered for her love of family, friends, and students, as well as her service to her church. Whenever there was a need, Mary Lou could always be counted upon to provide welcome comfort through home-baked cookies, a chicken casserole, or a quiet visit and prayer.
Mary Lou is survived by her three children; Susan J. Barnes and husband Wesley of Pflugerville, Lamont E. Geron of Corpus Christi, and Stephen R. Geron and wife Jane of San Angelo; four grandchildren, Kelley Barnes of Pflugerville, Erin Barnes Schreck and husband Hans of Pflugerville, Jason Geron and wife Lisa of San Angelo, and Stephen A. Geron of San Angelo; four great grandchildren, David and Wesley Schreck of Pflugerville, and Tabatha and Logan Geron of San Angelo; and sister-in-law Billie Muse of Flower Mound. She is preceded in death by her husband Charles and her brother, Frank W. Epley.
The family thanks the staff of Colonial Gardens Alzheimer’s Assisted Living in Austin, St. David’s Hospitals, Pflugerville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and, most especially, Hospice Austin, for the loving care of Mom and us over the last four years. They are truly angels among us.
