Mozelle Iree Medearis was born on August 11, 1924, in Bluff Springs, Texas, to James Ever Medearis and Pearl Edgar Medearis. She was the ninth of their children. She grew up on the Medearis family farm, as a proud Medearis, where she learned the value of hard work, faith, and family. Mozelle was a talented musician. She shared her gift through playing the piano and singing gospel songs.
At an early age, Mozelle accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was baptized at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church by the late Rev. T. H. Wright. Her faith remained the foundation of her life. In 1959, she became a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Austin, Texas where she faithfully served under the leadership of Rev. S.A. Davis who passed away in 1969. As a member of the Pastoral Advisory Committee, Mozelle was instrumental in the process to select Rev. G.V. Clark as Pastor in 1970. In 2021, Pastor Clark announced his plan to retire, and a Pulpit Selection Committee was formed. Mozelle’s son, Milton B. Lee II was part of the committee to affirm Rev. Daryl Horton as Pastor.
For over sixty-seven years, Mozelle’s passion for Christ, His church, her family, and friends were reflected through the offering of her talents, support and sacrificial service through various ministries. She was active with the Silver Soldiers, Sunday School, Hannah’s Circle, food pantry, Clothes Closet, and the Usher Board until her health began to fade. She valued her Mt. Zion Baptist Church family and the many lifelong friendships she formed. She felt so blessed.
Mozelle graduated from the Original L.C. Anderson High School. She often shared fond memories of her driving to high school and riding around town with her beloved sister, Juanita. She was an accomplished seamstress who enjoyed sewing the latest fashion designs. She had a passion for cooking, often expressing her love, by preparing tasty food for others to enjoy. She delighted in shopping for antiques and “hat shopping” in her spare time. Mozelle was known for her feisty and high spirited yet loving personality. She had a special way of making everyone feel welcomed and loved. Mozelle worked many years at Travis High School in the Austin Independent School District as a hall monitor, where she built meaningful connections with students and staff.
Mozelle met and married the love of her life, Milton B. Lee Sr. They shared forty-three wonderful years until his death in 1990. In December 1947, they welcomed their son, Milton B. Lee II, who brought them immense pride and joy. Mozelle found her greatest happiness in being a mother, grandmother, and as a faithful servant of the Lord.
Mozelle was preceded in death by her parents, James and Pearl Medearis; her beloved husband, Milton B. Lee Sr.; her brothers George (Geraldine), James (Mildred W.), Edgar (Lizzie Mae), General Hood (Lucinda), Garland (Mildred H.), and Victor (Gladys) Medearis; and her sisters LaTese “T-Baby” (Alvin), Juanita Manor (Rev. Vernon), and Bessie Barrow (Louis).
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving and attentive son, Milton B. Lee II, and daughter-in-law, Sarah; her devoted granddaughter, Chanda Wheeler (Teddy); grandchildren Shannon Rodgers Bryant (Ross) and Quentinn Marsh (Aja); her great-grandchildren, Ali B. Williams and Saana Marsh; along with an abundance of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and longtime friends.
Mozelle’s life was a beautiful testament to her unwavering faith in God, enduring love for others, and joyful service. Her legacy will continue to live on in all who were blessed to know and be loved by her.
