Quang was born in Vietnam, the oldest of 8 children. He spent much of his childhood in Saigon, Vietnam. He pursued his college education at Saigon University, studying Business Administration.
After graduating from college, he worked for the South Vietnamese government in Rạch Giá, in the Kiên Giang province. While there, he met and married his wife Hang in 1968. Together, they had 3 sons and 1 daughter.
It was during the fall of Saigon in 1975 that he had to move his family from Vietnam. They embarked on a perilous boat journey in search of a better home. Both Quang and Hang left their families behind, with little English spoken between them, and brought their 4 young children to start a new life in America. Their search brought them to upstate New York, in a small town called Endicott.
It was through hard work and diligence that they persevered. In the early years, they took on odd jobs in the food service industry. In 1977, he began his career at IBM in Binghamton, NY, working in Manufacturing. He slowly worked his way up and was offered a relocation package to move his family to Austin, TX in 1980.
Here, they began another new life. He attended Austin Community College and obtained an Associate degree in Data Processing in 1985. His pursuit of higher education continued, and he went on to obtain a BS in Computer Science at St. Edward’s University in 1993.
The additional schooling resulted in numerous promotions at IBM and allowed him to stay with the company until 1992, when he opted for early retirement. However, not wanting to stay idle, he pursued other callings, and became an agent for insurance, travel, tax accounting and real estate.
It was 1994 when another profession called to him – that of an individual business owner. An opportunity presented itself for him to take over a nail salon. Always the one to take on a new challenge, Quang and Hang become owners of Colorful Nails, a nail salon in Northwest Austin. This endeavor lasted for 18 years.
During that time, he and his wife traveled extensively throughout the world. They were able to visit destinations that they had only dreamed of. They were both examples of what immigrants could achieve through hard work.
Sadly, Quang was diagnosed with ALS in October 2014. This devastating neurodegenerative disease took a slow and painful progression throughout his body, until his body finally succumbed on July 30, 2018. Every day of this journey was overseen by his loving and devoted wife Hang, who was his caretaker throughout his illness.
We will never forget Quang’s impact on our lives. He supported many of his families and helped them in their pursuit of a better life in America.
