A graduate from The University of Texas at Austin, he earned an engineering degree and began his architectural career in the Bridge Division for the Texas State Highway Department, then moved to private consulting.
He was proud of his service on the USS Pennsylvania during WWII and then as well for his service in Korea. He later joined the Air Force National Guard and retired at the rank of Colonel, serving at the Camp Mabry Air Force Reserve in Austin.
His passion was traveling and music. He played bass in a jazz band in his early years when he could, and continued his love for music, big band and jazz, especially Dixieland, throughout his life. After living in Los Angeles, he and his wife Kaye, moved to a beautiful farm in Cranberry, Pennsylvania, where they eventually retired.
He is preceded in death by his oldest son, Ricardo Thomas Salas; sisters, Theresa Luna, Dora Salas, Gloria Fitzgerald, Melinda Salas, and Nellie Henry; his mother, Maria Saucedo Salas; and his father, Reynaldo Victor Salas. He leaves behind his sisters, Helen Fernandez, Mary Louise Cantu, and Zenovia Benedict; his daughter, Katherine Salas Fowler and her husband, Donnie and their children, Rebecca Lemon and husband Brad, Donnie Fowler III and wife Shelley, and David Fowler and wife Brandy; his daughter, Yvette Salas Reynolds, and her son, Krendon and daughter Olivia Reynolds; his son, Ronald James Salas and wife Gloria; and Ricky’s wife, Trish Salas and Ricky’s daughter Deana Garcia and her husband John, and her sons Nicholas and Lane. There are also many nieces and nephews, too many to list here, that share in the loss of their uncle.
We would like to thank Darole Pertz, Norene Silva, and the Seneca Evangelical Congregational Church in Cranberry, Pennsylvania, and the Knights Assisted Living for their friendship and loving care of our father for the years of special care in Pflugerville.
