A native Texan, Sheryl was born in Fort Worth on September 16, 1946, and grew up in La Marque. After high school, the family moved to West Virginia, where she attended Marshall University and graduated from nursing school. In the drama club at Marshall, she met her future husband, Robert “Rob” Davie. When Rob joined the Air Force, the pair moved to Florida, where Sheryl joined the Civil Air Patrol and learned to solo fly a plane, an accomplishment she always spoke of with great pride. Once Rob’s military training was finished, they moved to the other side of the world—Clark Air Base in the Philippines. There, Sheryl took up the hobby of gardening and produced a variety of fruits and vegetables for the troops. In the late 70s, Sheryl and Rob returned to the states to Long Beach, California, where Sean, their only son, was born. Not long after, they returned to Texas and settled in Friendswood for many years, where Sheryl completed her master’s degree in nursing. She loved the challenging work of a Neonatal ICU nurse and later flourished as a nursing educator. Following Rob’s death in 2006 and her retirement in 2008, Sheryl moved to Round Rock with her son, where she became a very active participant in the BACA Senior Center’s Writing and Drama Clubs.
Writing was a common thread throughout Sheryl’s entire life, including an early publication in the La Marque Junior Historian Journal, articles in her university newspaper the Parthenon, a recurring newsletter for Air Force wives, and poems and stories in multiple books published by the BACA Center. For the last few years, she had been working on both her memoirs and a novella heavily influenced by her life. Her writing often drew from her incredible experiences, painting a perfect picture in her own words to remember the vibrant, charismatic person she was and the adventure-filled life she lived.
Sheryl is survived by Sean and Carrie Davie, her son and daughter-in-law, and Nancy and Edward Schimpf, her sister and brother-in-law. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Struthers Davie, her sister, Anita Clepper, and her brother, Mark Weddell.
Family and friends will be received on her birthday, Wednesday, September 16, 2020, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home, 14501 Interstate 35, Pflugerville, Texas, for a memorial visitation. The visitation will also be available online via the link provided below.
