Thomas Roy Bullock, a kind and humble servant with a deep faith, passed away on March 2, 2026, at the age of 94.
Roy was born in Eldorado, Teas to Bessie Boyce Christian and Thomas Bullock, and was raised in Austin. He graduated from Austin High School in 1949.
Roy joined the National Guard after his graduation and served in the U.S. Army in Korea. When he returned to the states, he returned to the National Guard where he pursued his interest in flying to become a helicopter pilot. He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 with a combined 27 years of service.
His commitment to service extended beyond the military. He dedicated 35 years to the Texas Department of Transportation’s Austin District, where he held many roles including roadway materials analyst, surveyor, district safety coordinator, and human resource officer.
For 34 years, Roy served as an elder at the Church of Christ in Hyde Park, offering spiritual guidance and ensuring the upkeep of the church building.
In addition to his gift of service, Roy possessed a remarkable talent for woodworking. He poured his creativity and craftsmanship in restoring furniture and crafting exquisite pieces of art. Among his creations were 27 handcrafted mountain dulcimers, which he lovingly gave to friends and family. One of his beautiful dulcimers garnered nationwide recognition when it was loaned to a traveling exhibit showcasing handcrafted mesquite items.
Family and friends have shared stories of his generous, kind spirit as well as his interest and willingness to listen to them. He never met a stranger and was fascinated to hear their stories.
No matter what stage of life or who he interacted with, Roy’s generous heart and kind spirit was offered to all. He was a great listener and a loyal friend.
As a rule-follower and animal lover, his one known act of civil disobedience occurred when as a child, he unlatched the city’s animal control cages to release all the apprehended dogs, if they opted for their freedom.
