It is with heavy heart, but joyous remembrance, that the family of Timothy I. O'Hearn, announce his unexpected death on June 13, 2013 in Austin, Texas. Born on January 5, 1950, Omaha, NE to William J. O'Hearn and Roberta H. O'Hearn, Tim was a beloved son, faithful brother, and overjoyed father, grandfather, and uncle to the family he came to selflessly and graciously lead. To them, to his colleagues, and to his many, many friends- which he could make with the turn of his head and a flash of his personal, if not mischievous smile- he will, as he always has, exemplify generosity, empathy, and wry-while-deeply-felt humanity.
For the past 35 years, Tim proudly served as President of Austin Foam Plastics, a company he helped build, and continually grow, from the ground up. During that 35 years leading Austin Foam, he labored passionately and spoke eloquently about expanding the scope of his business for the paramount reason of helping to facilitate a livelihood for his employees, his employees' families, and the employees of companies he did business with on three continents. In doing so, he constantly worked to raise the scale of standard compensation for those he worked alongside- as he recognized them: not as subordinates, but as co-workers in delivering excellence to their customers and to each other. Despite his means, which he primarily used to enrich the lives of his loved ones and benefit the charitable work of numerous local arts and philanthropic organizations, Tim delighted personally in simple, irreplaceable, and unpretentious pleasures: laughter; the kindness, maturity, individuality, humility, and personal success (especially athletic success) of his adored daughters and grandchildren; the comfort and amusement of his cherished mother Roberta, the matriarch from whom he learned his strong sense of equality; a well-planned, while approachable and frequent, reunion of his family; a gift, whatever the size, that might make someone's life feel more dignified and achievable; personal responsibility through encouragement; the truth that all people have something in them worth hearing; listening; speaking (yes, maybe bawdily when called for); watching as others realized the greatness he knew always resided in them; Bob Dylan; The Beatles; having once touched George Harrison's shoulder on a tarmac in Houston as a teenager; honesty; sharing. He said often how blessed he was to see and interact in the world through frequent travel, but more so, he relished in being able to give the gift of travel, and so self-knowledge, to his many family members and friends.
Preceded in death by his father William "Bill" O'Hearn and brother Patrick "Bart" O'Hearn, Tim is survived by his cherished mother Roberta H. O'Hearn; his daughter April Abello, son-in-law Carlos Abello and grandchildren Carlos William Abello and Mia Kathryn Abello; his daughters Katherine Devan O'Hearn, Dacey Marie O'Hearn, and their mother Helen O'Hearn; his brothers and sisters: Shawn O'Hearn and wife Charlotte O'Hearn; Chris Satterfield; Brock O'Hearn and wife Carol O'Hearn; Peggy Chancellor and husband Dewayne Chancellor; Kevin O'Hearn and wife Sandy O'Hearn; and Heather O'Hearn Black; as well as many nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews, whom Tim doted on, supported, and loved profoundly with individual attention and affection. His life was a grand, larger-than-mortality tribute to us all. In lieu of flowers, and in the spirit of Tim's personal dedication to philanthropy, the family requests individuals and groups to send donations to charities of their choosing in Tim's memory. The O'Hearn family also asks that Tim be remembered in your prayers, as he would have remembered you in his.
